Timeline - On the team> |
Under Michelle's tutorage, Dervis continually improved, so much so that he set his sights on the 1995 European Championships in France at the age of only 14. But it wasn’t to be, the selectors felt he was not ready for international competition and so took someone else instead. This discussion outraged Dervis and ignited a determination to represent Great Britain at the following 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games. Training increased, intensity increased and so to did his speed. He had competed and beaten the best Britain had to offer, all that was left now was for the selectors to chose the team. He said, “The wait was unbearable. I was the first to the post every morning, I drove my family insane.” Had he proven himself in the eyes of the selectors or was it not to be, again. The day came, and
the news was good, Dervis was off to his first ever international competition
and no less than the Paralympic Games. |
