After competing at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games, Dervis decided to take a break from international swimming to concentrate on his university studies.

During this time away from the sport, the anoncement that London was to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was made. This news inspired Dervis to get back into sport.

He began by looking back over his swimming career and see if he had achieved all his goals. The answer was no. The only goal he had not achieved was that of becoming Paralympic Champion.

Inspired by 2012 and hungry fo gold, he began training for the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, to see if he could achieve his dream.

Besides training, Dervis also takes time to promot sport and its benifits. He does this by visiting local schools, clubs and events in order to tell his story, in the hope of inspiring both young and old.
